Last Friday, Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark released the following statement on TVOntario’s announcement that it will continue sending its over-the-air signal from eight transmitters located in Ottawa, Belleville, Thunder Bay, Chatham, Cloyne, Kitchener, London and Windsor:
“I’m pleased that the Wynne government and TVOntario have acted on the outcry from the residents of Leeds-Grenville and Ontarians across the province by reversing this short-sighted decision.
“Clearly, they underestimated the number of Ontarians who rely on the free broadcast signal to receive TVO’s programming. As I stated in my Feb. 2, 2017, letter to Education Minister Mitzie Hunter: “All provincial taxpayers contribute to the $40 million TVO receives from the government on an annual basis. So, it should go without saying that all Ontarians should be able to watch TVO’s programming on their television screens.’
“Although TVO has done the right thing today, the decision to even consider cutting this service in the first place proves once again that whether we’re talking about access to public services or out-of-control hydro rates, the Wynne government does not understand the reality of life for Ontarians living outside the GTA.”
