BBQ for Parkinsons

For the eighth year, John and Barb Spero invited a few of their friends and neighbours over to their place for a BBQ this past weekend. Not a very unusual summer activity, you may think, but this BBQ was attended by around 45 people and raised money for Parkinson’s research. The golfing barbeque, as John calls it, took place in their back garden, which backs on to the Rideau River, with lovely views and a peaceful vibe. This was complemented by the music of local band, Rosewood, featuring Peter Johnson and Herb Cloutier.

John was diagnosed with Parkinsons 18 years ago, but that never stopped him from doing the things he loved most. After moving to North Grenville, John initiated an annual golf tournament to raise money for Parkinsons. Over the years, he has raised over $30,000 dollars for the cause.

The golfing side of the event took place at Rideau Glen Golf Club, and was won by the foursome from the Pirate Cove Marina, with a round of 61. Congratulations to them, and thanks to all the foursomes who took part this year.

The barbeque was when the prizes were handed out, an auction was held, and everyone relaxed and enjoyed the great food and wonderful atmosphere. The pies and salads were supplied by Barb, and all of the bbq-ing was done by Ron Tracey, who was the man responsible for gathering all the sponsors and prizes that made the event possible, as well as conducting the auction. Well done to Ron, and John and Barb were really full of his praises.

The main sponsor this year was the B&H Grocer, as Jim and Judy Beveridge honoured Jim’s mother who had died recently. All the proceeds from the golf and bbq went to Parkinson Canada, which has been providing support services and education to people living with Parkinson’s disease, their families, and the health care professionals who treat them, since 1965.

Ron commented on just how generous the people and local businesses are in North Grenville, and he, John and Barb want to thank those who made this year’s tournament happen: first, of course, B&H Your Community Grocery, and also (in alphabetical order) Ayling Marina, Best in the Biz, Brewing Oasis, Canadian Tire Kemptville, Car Star, Choice Vintners Manotick, CIBC Kemptville, Class Axe Guitars, Dan Murphy Ford, Dr. Rahimkhani Dental Clinic, EB Sales and Service, eQuinnelle Golf Club, Equinelle Pharmacy, Fat Les’s Kemptville, Ferguson Forest Centre, First Stop Rental, Gertika Financial Group, Giant Tiger Kemptville, Grahame’s Bakery, Hard Stones Grill Kemptville, Highliner Food Service, Home Hardware Kemptville, Hurst Marina, Jane’s catering, Jarritos, Jesebelles Boutique, Kawartha Dairy, KrisAlis Inc., Krown Rust Control Kemptville, LCBO Kemptville, Lexus, Mark’s Work Wearhouse Kanata, Mark’s Work Wearhouse Kemptville, Master Flow Heating and Air Conditioning, Rosewood (Music) Myers, O’Heaphy’s Irish Pub, Pirate Cove Marina, Plane Nutz Kemptville, Pro Physio, RBC, Rideau Glen Gold Course, Ron’s Roofing, Sam’s Pizzeria, Sauve Heating, Shoeless Joe’s Sports Grill Kemptville, South Branch Bistro, Sports Check, Staples Business Depot Kemptville, Tallman Truck Centre, Topline Trailers and Equipment Rentals, The Sam group Ltd., Tim Horton’s and TSC Stores Kemptville.
