Merrickville Public School hosted a spaghetti dinner at the Community Centre on Saturday night as their final fundraiser for a new play structure at the school.

The playground will be dedicated to former teacher, Betty MacDonald, who passed away a few years ago. She was very involved in the Merrickville community and volunteered at the school even after she retired. “She led by example,” says parent volunteer Michelle Traher. “We want the kids to volunteer in the community just like she did.”

The dinner brought the community together, with homemade pasta sauce, salad and garlic bread. There were also gorgeous cupcakes for sale and a silent auction with items donated by various businesses in the Village. “We had over 50 silent auction donations,” Michelle says.

Merrickville Public School Principal Tanya Preston says putting the event together was a lot of work for the parent council. “It is great to see it come together,” she says. “This should get us to our goal to be able to replace the play structure this summer.”

Michelle says overall the event was a success, raising $2600 towards the playground. “We appreciate all the volunteers and business who contributed,” Michelle says. “This community is the best community to live in.”
