Two Kemptville girls are getting the chance to play with the Ottawa Senators this holiday season. Eleven-year-old Brooklyn McNeely and eight-year old Lily McNeely are two of fourteen other kids who have been selected to take part in the Ottawa Senators skills competition at the Canadian Tire Centre on New Years Eve.

The Senators Junior Skill Challenge is open to Novice, Atom, and Peewee minor hockey teams who are registered with Hockey Eastern Ontario, Ottawa District Womens Hockey Association, or Hockey Outaouais. Both girls play for Kemptville Storm, with Brooklyn playing at the Peewee level, and Lily playing on the Novice team.

To qualify, Brooklyn and Lily had to compete against other girls and boys of their age in a skills competition at the Canadian Tire Centre earlier this season. “In order to sign up, all you had to do was buy four tickets for one of the games,” says their father, Pat McNeely. “I thought it would be really cool for them to have the opportunity to play on a big rink.”

At the tryouts, the girls were put to the test with challenges that measured their agility, speed, and accuracy on the ice. Brooklyn says her favourite activity was the agility weave, where she had to handle a puck while skating in between pylons, while Lily preferred the obstacle course. The McNeelys did not expect the girls to make it through the try outs, and when they got the emails that they had both been chosen to skate with the Sens, the whole family was over the moon.  “[The girl’s] feet haven’t touched the ground since they got the news,” says their Grandfather, Gary Blake.

The girls will be competing alongside the Ottawa Senators on December 31, either on Team Karlsson or Team Phaneuf. They will have the opportunity to meet the Sens and sit on the same bench as them, as they wait for their turn to skate. Brooklyn says she hopes to get the chance to meet Jean-Gabriel Pageau, who plays centre, like her. Lily is also hoping to meet her favourite player, Sens Captain, Erik Karlsson.

The whole family is looking forward to what is sure to be a special New Years Eve for all of them. Mother, Terri-Lynn McNeely, says it’s incredible to see her children skating on such a big rink. Brooklyn and Lily also appreciate the fact that they are going to be able to share the experience as sisters, and remember it for years to come. “As Brooklyn has said, it’s a once in a lifetime experience,” Pat says.

A member of the Ottawa Senators will be in Winchester on Friday as part of a fundraiser for the House of Lazarus [HOL], which will be hosting their “For the Love of the Game” sports merchandise sale at the Joel Steele Community Centre this coming weekend to raise money for their Food Bank and other outreach programs. Thousands of brand new trademarked sports items will be available from NHL, NFL, MLB and NASCAR teams, at significantly discounted prices.

As if that’s not enough, Ottawa Senators defender, Fredrik Claesson, will be at the sale on Friday, November 3, at 6pm to sign autographs for fans. HOL is also raffling off a hockey stick signed by the entire Sens team, as well as Sens tickets, and a fun basket of Sens merchandise. To top it all off, whoever buys merchandise at the sale will be entered to win another pair of Sens tickets, donated by O’Farrell Financial.

The “For the Love of the Game” sale will be on from 5pm to 9pm on Friday, November 3, and Saturday, November 4, from 10am to 4pm.

The Sunday afternoon game against the Ottawa Senators saw the 73’s come out for the first on fire, but they let their foot off the gas during second and third to give Ottawa 3-1 victory.

Kemptville with man advantage at 4:59, when Row and Gaudet cycling low so Adam Alavi could bury the loose puck for a PPG. Ottawa answered back at 1:37, as Teddy Simson capitalized the rubbage assisted by Delisle and Boulrice to even it up.
Alexeev to Thomas Stevenson on the centre point to rifle it by Hodgins at 10:02 in the second period for go-ahead Ottawa goal.

Final twenty: with the rubber bouncing like an ping-pong ball both ways making it difficult to control. 73’s hammered Andriano with 27 SOG, but the Senators managed to tame the disc to find the open net at 16:26 when Way blasted one off stopper and Darcy Walsh wrapped it up. Kemptville launched 45 SOG at Ian Andriano and 31 SOG for Nicholas Hodgins to give Ottawa a 3 to 1 win.

Next contest: Saturday at 2:30 in the Bears Den at Smiths Falls to face the Pembroke Lumber Kings with Kemptville peppering 48 SOG and Lumber Kings only 17 SOG to take a 5-1 win.

Kemptville hit the ice aggressively with positive determination for the first frame, as Beauparlant cycled with Samanski back to Noah Rowe to blast it past Smith at 15:56 for first marker. Alavi, with Bissonette, controlled the half boards, over to Victor Tracy who launched a missile through the centre to beat Smith at 7:02. Hunter combined with Kirkby, as Derek Osik slammed it home for another tally at 6:36 to close out the twenty, with 3 to zip lead and out-gunning Pembroke by 17-2 SOG.

Second stanza remained scoreless, with the only marks as PIM and Kemptville controlling SOG 16-10.

Last frame: York ahead to Gaudet to spring a speedy Bobby Dow driving hard to the net to slide it through to make it 4 point lead at 19:41. The magic of Gaudet with tic-tac-toe across to Bobby Dow for his second scratch on the score-sheet at 14:56 to chase Jake Smith. After a TO by Pembroke to calm the troops, and entrance of Ryan Glander, the Lumber Kings finally spoiled Hodgins SO attempt at 10:42, as Peter Falivena assisted from Buckley and Marinic for come-back.

The clock ran out and with the 73’s pumping 48 SOG to Lumber Kings 17 pulled out a 5-1 win to break a five-game losing streak and, hopefully, continue to move in a positive direction.

Come on out and experience “Hockey with Edge”…..support your community 73’s.
