This weekend you can expect to see Christmas trees around town in an effort to collect toys for children in need. November 12 marks the beginning of this year’s Giving Tree campaign for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Leeds and Grenville. Trees will be put up in all the banks and at the Municipal Centre, and decorated with ornaments with a child’s gender and age. The idea is that members of the public take one ornament and bring it back with a gift that corresponds to the gender and age on it.
“The gifts will be given out at the Big Brothers Big Sisters annual Christmas party,” says Leanne Trimble, of Big Brothers Big Sisters. “Anything leftover will be given to kids in need at the local schools.”
This is the second annual Giving Tree campaign, and Leanne hopes it will be just as successful as it was last year. “Last year was awesome,” she said, noting that they had so many gifts they were able to donate some as far away as Spencerville. “It shows that the people in the community really care.”
