HOL to launch online auction for horse print

Like horses? How about photography? The House of Lazarus (HOL) is launching an online auction featuring a print of a wild horse on Sable Island in Nova Scotia, donated by renowned Ottawa photographer and former radio announcer Sandy Sharkey.

“I was happy to donate this wild Sable Island horse print to raise funds for those in need,” said Sandy. “The House of Lazarus is an incredible organization that provides a helping hand for individuals and families, with dignity and respect. It does my heart good to help that effort and I hope this special wild horse finds a place in someone’s heart!”

Sandy posted a picture of the print on Facebook back in December and asked her followers to nominate a charitable recipient of the print, which is valued at nearly $500. Mandy Ayotte nominated the HOL, and we were announced as the winner on December 12. Sandy delivered the print to the HOL in person three days later. The print measures three feet high, by two feet wide.

To maximize funds generated through the print, the HOL decided to host an online auction, where people had the chance to bid on the print. “An online auction is a natural choice for an item like this, which will hopefully generate a lot of interest from the local equestrian community,” said Jennifer Tenbult, HOL operations manager. “Our goal is to bring in the value of the print, and anything above and beyond that would be amazing! This print is a wonderful gift and we are really hoping to do it justice through this online auction.”

Every dollar raised through this online auction will benefit the HOL outreach programs and food bank, which serves over 100 local families each month, coming from North Grenville, South Grenville, North Dundas and South Dundas. Approximately 40% of HOL food bank clients are children and 10% are seniors.

The online auction kicks off on February 23 at 12 noon, and will run until March 9 at 12 noon. To place a bid, people must visit the House of Lazarus Community Outreach Mission Facebook page and place their bid in the comments below the online auction post. The minimum starting bid for the print is $100, and bids will only be accepted in increments of $5 or more. The highest bidder will be notified of their success on March 9.

“By bidding in this online auction, or just sharing the post with all your Facebook friends to increase awareness, you will be helping people in your community who rely on the food bank to get through the month,” said Jennifer. “Good luck to all the bidders!”
