Several of North Grenville's leading ladies dancing up a storm

by Susan Smith, Executive Director, Kemptville & District Home Support

My toes may still be tapping from the lively tunes played by ‘The Jivewires’ at Kemptville & District Home Support’s second annual Big Band Dance fundraiser. This was a phenomenal efforts and could not have been accomplished without the group of dedicated volunteers, headed by Evelyn Surrey. The hours of work in planning, promoting the event, set-up, keeping everything on track during the evening, then packing it all up… quite the feat! Also, thank you to the Knights of Columbus for volunteering to look after the bar – you continue to keep on giving and making a difference.

Many thanks to our main sponsors for the Big Band Dance: Kemptville Retirement Living; Grenville Mutual Insurance Company; Matt Felker of O’Farrell Financial; North Grenville Times; and Erick LePors, Dial A Chef. Without these sponsors, along with Walker & Associates; Equinelle Pharmasave; Allister Brown; Jansen Law; the numerous businesses that donated items to the event and the silent auction; and to all of those who purchased tickets and attended on the night – we could not have put on this event! I’m very excited to let you know that $10,200 was raised!

These funds will go towards the over $55,000 Kemptville & District Home Support has to raise each year to continue to provide the quality programs and services in the community. Again, Thank You to all!

Plans are underway for Seniors’ Month in June. The theme this year is: “Now’s the time to start something new”. As we age, it is often a time when we feel that we have more time to ourselves, as our families grow up and have their own lives. With retirement, or even a second career, there is always something new to spark an interest – especially here in North Grenville and the surrounding area. There may be activities here at KDHSI that are appealing; or what about volunteering? It is always fun to get to know people while helping out in a variety of areas. Please stop by and have a look around the Centre – you may find ‘something new’ to start.

Mark your calendars on Tuesday June 12, for Kemptville & District Home Support’s Annual Seniors’ BBQ/Picnic, held at beautiful Maplewood Park in Oxford Mills. It is so wonderful that the Kemptville Lions Club will be providing the BBQ once again this year. This is a FREE event for area seniors. If you are interested in attending, please call the office to let us know, so that we can plan for the correct amount of food. And, if anyone needs a drive, just let us know and we can arrange this for you. Please bring your lawn chairs to relax under the trees, and listen to music, enjoying the company of others.

This past weekend was so relaxing, with great weather and time spent outside with my family. The daffodils held up surprisingly well to the wind Friday night and look like a soft blanket of sunshine! William Wordsworth, in ‘The Daffodils’ wrote, “…And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.”

Until next time,
