Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark has tabled two Order Paper questions to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change regarding the validity of the decades-old Environmental Assessment for the ED-19 site in the Township of Edwardsburgh/Cardinal. That assessment provided the basis for the existing Certificate of Approval to operate the site as a landfill, which was issued by the province in 1998.
“Regional ministry staff confirmed it would be unprecedented to open a landfill relying on approvals granted more than 20 years ago, so it’s important to raise this matter directly with the minister now,” said Steve. “I appreciate that the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville council will also be writing the minister about this matter and I wanted to support their request through this process.”
Under the Legislative Assembly’s Standing Orders, Clark pointed out the minister is obligated to provide a written response to the questions within 24 sitting days. Clark’s questions appeared on the Legislative Assembly’s Orders and Notices today, meaning Environment and Climate Change Minister Glen Murray has until May 15 to respond.
“It’s critical for the public to not only get a legal opinion from Minister Murray, but to have clarity on how he would approach a review of such a dated Environmental Assessment,” said the MPP.
